The Land of Stories: The Enchantress Returns
By Chris Colfer
“Anyone can have a once-upon-a-time or a happily-ever-after, but it’s the journey between that makes the story worth telling.”
Rate: A (it went a whole grade up from the last one)
So I finished The Enchantress Returns a few days ago and I loved it. Yes, I liked it more than book 1 hands down. I thought everything was more detailed and like I really connected with the magical world a little more. We got to know characters from the Land of Stories better and other places. Again Chris Colfer out did himself tying everything together but more about that below ↓
Characters? We still had all the same characters from the last book: Conner, Alex, Fairy Godmother, Froggy, etc. but we got to know so many characters better like Red, Jack and Goldilocks. Also The Enchantress is a great villain. And I finally decided who my favorite twin is and it is….. Conner! He’s just so relatable, sarcastic and the most random person. I don’t know if that may change as the books go on but for now it’s him. Last time I said the characters were amazing and I stand by it, I would actually go as far as saying they were better than amazing in this book.
Setting? There were less settings this time but we met some cool new places. One of my favorite settings was at the end, I don’t want to say too much because this is the no spoilers section but yeah it was pretty cool, at least how I see it in my head.
Plot? I liked the plot of this one better, I think it was because there was only one villain so the characters weren’t running around afraid of every little creature or person. The story was clearer and so well developed, much more defined the one before. In The Wishing Spell (book 1) Chris Colfer was trying to fit so many things into every chapter that at times it was overwhelming but this one spread the story so much better.
Recommend? Definitely. I mean unless you completely hated the first one but even if you kind of didn’t like it that much (like a 6 out of 10) this one might change your mind about the series.
That’s all for *Non-Spoilers* so if you haven’t read the book and don’t want to be spoiled, skip to the end 🙂
Favorite Part? My favorite parts were: When Red found Clawdius and Goldilocks realized it was a wolf not a puppy, hilarious (Chapter 17), I liked when they visited the Sleeping Kingdom following the ghost of Sleeping Beauty’s Grandmother who turns out to be Belle which means she’s the one that fell in love with the Beast who Izma has trapped (Chapter 24), all the souls Izma has trapped are known characters like Beast and the flautist, etc. (Chapter 13). I also liked smaller details like Conner writes like his dad and Rumpelstiltskin is actually a good guy, kind of.
Least Favorite Part? The dream sequence (Chapter 27) it was weird or at least I didn’t understand it. I don’t think it was necessary, they could’ve brought those characters out in some other way or another book.
What would I change? I would change Alex’s dream, I would have shown her speaking to her dad instead of the four characters because while I understand Alex has an emotional attachment to them, we (the readers) don’t and it would have been a sweeter moment if she got to see her dad.
Final Thoughts? Really excited to read the next one (I already started) and hoping the books keep getting better. This one was also a fast read and action full, never a dull moment on the Land of Stories.
That is all for this book talk. Comment down below if you’ve read it and what you thought? What were your favorite parts and least favorites? And if you haven’t read it are you planning on reading it? Hope you guys enjoyed, see you soon.
